“Our mission is to develop the best lenticular printing software in the world with the goal of achieving a leading position in that market.”
David García, CEO of Imagiam
The history of Imagiam's early days dates back to the end of the nineties. After graduating as a Telecommunications Engineer at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and working for two years at the UPC's Department of Digital Image Processing, David García discovers in 1997 an innovative algorithm for image segmentation –or automatic object recognition– that offers significantly better results than the state of the art. Encouraged by this breakthrough, between 1997 and 1999 he spends most of his time developing two applications that exploit the benefits of this new technology. Thus MaskWarrior and PathOptimizer are born, two plugins for Adobe Photoshop for the automatic selection of objects in still images.
These developments do not go unnoticed to the local investment community and some analysts believe that these algorithms could have powerful applications in different fields of the industry. In 1999, David Garcia presents his project in an entrepreneurship contest and manages to reach the finals, which gives him visibility and access to mentors, business angels and investment forums. As a result, in May 2000, he finally raises a first round of venture capital funding and Imagiam High Image Techs Ltd is officially founded as a private company. By then Lenticular Suite has already joined the applications portfolio of the organization and, one year later, Imagiam wins the first prize at the InnoBIT 2001 contest, awarded with a significant amount of cash and a postgraduate grant.
